Winter in Wengen
The skiing is set in the most spectacular scenery making any skiing holiday to Wengen a magical experience. What the resort lacks in miles of challenging ski runs is more than made up for in character and charm. It is a traditional winter resort with a good mix of skiing for all abilities. It is part of the Jungfrau Top Ski Region that consists of the Kleine Scheidegg – Mannlichen area (110km of piste) which is accessed by train or cable car from the village; Murren – Schilthorn area (53km of piste) which is located across the Lauterbrunnen valley; and Grindelwald – First (50km of piste) located above Grindelwald.
For the smaller visitor, an english speaking kindergarten in the village can look after the younger members of the family (18 months – 7yrs). There are a total of 6 nursery areas in the ski area for beginner skiers who are well catered for. For first time skiers or those wishing to improve on their technique, ski instruction is available by the local ski school and private school that have english speaking instructors. For intermediates, long wide open runs are to be had above the tree line and runs down to Grindelwald. Experts can follow the route of the famous world cup race from the Lauberhorn down to Innerwengen.
The International Lauberhorn race, held in January each year, is the highlight of the winter ski calender when the world’s best come to Wengen to tackle the demanding course.
Apres ski in Wengen is more of a low key affair compared to some of the more lively swiss resorts. Once the lifts close skiers head to the area around the train station and the main street which provide a choice of cafe’s and lively bars.
Other winter activities include the sports centre and indoor pool, curling, ice skating, snow shoeing, guided walks and sledging.
