Location

The Jungfrau Region, lying south of Interlaken and the lakes of Thunersee and Brienzersee is one of the most spectacular and dramatic areas of mountain scenery in Switzerland.  At its heart lies the Lauterbrunnen valley which is dominated by the mountain giants of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.

The legendary resort of Wengen perched above the valley, at an altitude of 1274m on a south-west sunny plateau, offers breathtaking views of mountain scenery of the grandest scale.   It is a car free village of old world charm, accessed from Lauterbrunnen by train.

The village provides a range of facilities - hotel restaurants, tea rooms, bars, banks, ski shops and outdoor clothing/accessory shops, CO-OP supermarket, bakery, butcher and cheese shop, chemist, grocer, souvenir and electrical shop, cinema and churches (including english church).

The chalet is in a great position located along a quiet lane and is situated adjacent the open air swimming pool (open in the summer). It is only 5 mins from the main shops, train station and other village amenities.   In the winter time, it has a fantastic position opposite the nursery ski area, and weather permitting is ski-in ski-out being only some 50m from the main ski run into the village.

Getting There

Wengen is located in central Swizerland in the Bernese Oberland.  It can be accessed by rail, road or air depending on the travel time available.  The most common way is flying into one of the main swiss airports at Zurich, Geneva, Bern or Basel which are served by scheduled and charter flights, including low cost operators.  If visitors have time, taking the train across europe is a wonderful and magical way to travel to Switzerland. Bern is the nearest airport to Wengen, however Zurich is better served by air carriers and as a result is the main arrival point for visitors travelling onto Wengen.  Private taxi transfers can be provided from the main airports to Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen.  By car, it is reached within 2 ½ hours as far as Lauterbrunnen.  Since there are no roads to Wengen cars must be left in Lauterbrunnen and the last stage of the journey taken by mountain railway.  The travelling time from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is 15 minutes.

Train travel is the most relaxing and scenic way to travel to Wengen.  Zurich and Geneva airports have train stations on their lower ground floors with good access to the cross country routes to Interlaken West and Ost.  By train, it is reached within 3 ½ hours from  Zurich airport and 4 hours from Geneva airport.  From Zurich, the main and quickest route is via Bern or a longer scenic route is via Luzern and over the Brunig Pass.  A change of train is required at Interlaken Ost to make the journey to Lauterbrunnen on the bernese oberland railway (BOB) and then a hop onto the wengeralp railway (WAB) on the adjacent track to travel up the mountain to Wengen.  The total journey time from Interlaken Ost to Wengen is usually 45 minutes.
